A downloadable game for Windows and macOS

At the end of 2020, writer Jay Bernard and sound designer Mwen, spent a week in Dragon Hall together, creating sounds and making up songs. Dragon Hall, a medieval building that has had many uses in its time, became a space for communing with the sheer weighty history present in the room. The outcome is part jam session, part sketchbook, part EP, and these fragments combine to create Tombland, a game in which you can re-arrange the sounds we created during that week.

The game itself is very simple: enter a virtual Dragon Hall, float like the disembodied spirit you are, and as you move you will trigger various sounds created in the room. Some are vocal, some are electronic. You can create arrangement clusters or just enjoy the pleasure of moving through the space.

Opening the Game

MAC

  • Go to your downloads folder and open AppleundercommonApril12.app
  • IMPORTANT: If you are asked for developer permissions, simply hold down cmd and then click the app; you should now see a menu that allows you to open the file.

PC

  • You will need to unzip the file UndercommonV2PC.zip
  • Once unzipped, you will need to click Sound project.exe

When you start the game here’s how to play:

  • Use your directional arrow keys to move around the space
  • You can activate a ball by moving the hand towards it and clicking once
  • Press and hold your mouse key, using the hand, to pick up balls and move them
  • The idea behind the game is that you can activate as many or as few balls to create the soundscape you want. All of the sounds are remixes or recordings from our time in the space.
  • You can float through and see the space from different heights and angles.
  • You can move balls closer together to create a cluster of sounds. You can click to permanently activate them, or you can move through them to activate temporarily. By doing this, you can create a path around the room or a cluster that intensifies as you approach it.
